This activity that was created by Professor Munoz for a Professional Development Event for the Writing Center’s tutors. It may also be adapted as an exercise for students in 100-level English courses. The purpose of the activity is to help students to work together to overcome self-limiting attitudes (fixed mindsets) by modeling “yes” statements (affirmations) that students may speak to each other as peers to help each other work through their writing struggles. This confidence-building activity also works well to build classroom community, and it would be especially suitable for a small cohort-based course like English 10 where students work closely together on developing their writing craft.
